The Kristin Sivertz Memorial Fund

Dr. Kristin Sivertz had an illustrious career as a psychiatrist, medical educator and senior administrator with the UBC Faculty of Medicine. This fund has been established in her memory and will support the creation of an endowed award at UBC. The prestigious prize will be offered to a third or fourth year MD student who embodies Dr. Sivertz’s many extraordinary personal qualities and who has begun to develop the core competencies of an exceptional physician early in their medical training. Please make a donation to support the award here.

Dr. Sivertz’s association with UBC lasted more than 25 years. Though she is especially remembered for her influential work in her chosen field of psychopharmacology—in particular with respect to pregnancy-related psychiatric illnesses and gender issues—the truth is Dr. Sivertz fulfilled many roles throughout her life. She joined UBC in 1984 as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and rose to Clinical Professor in 1998. From 1996-2002, she was the Co-Director of the Psychiatry Residency Program and, in 2002, she was appointed Co-Associate Dean of the UBC Postgraduate Medical Education program.

Dr. Sivertz was universally admired and beloved for her wisdom, warmth and commitment to the practice of medicine. She was exceptionally knowledgeable, but despite this was always committed to learning and growing as a physician and an educator. Her professionalism and her amazing skill with people meant she could help friends, colleagues and patients alike deal with whatever issues they faced. She was passionate about improving everyone’s health and well-being. She loved people, and always set a wonderful example in her life, her work and her care for others.

Today’s physician education programs are underpinned by the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework. Dr. Sivertz was the embodiment of the values described by the framework: Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Manager, Health Advocate, Scholar, and Professional. She was all of these things and much more, so it makes perfect sense to honour her memory with the creation of an award that recognizes these qualities in the physicians of tomorrow.

This award is an opportunity to create a permanent legacy at UBC for Dr. Sivertz. Your gift will help the next generation of students to succeed, while honouring the memory of an inspirational person. Please make your donation today.
