The UBC Okanagan campus fitness centre is in the highest need in the area of recreation for campus-wide student, faculty and staff use. In 1994 the current gymnasium facilities were built and adequately designed for 3,000 students of whom about 10% were in residence.
Currently, UBC Okanagan has over 7,000 students of whom 17% are in residence; new additions to campus residence will only increase the number of students needing recreational facilities. A proposed three-level addition to the present UBC Okanagan gymnasium and fitness centre will expand upon the current facilities to meet the growing student population. Fitness programs for students run by the Okanagan Campus Rec include fitness classes, intramural sports and tournaments and personal training. Such programs housed in expanded facilities will allow the Okanagan student population greater access to healthy living on campus.
The fitness centre will be the showcase of UBC Okanagan Athletics and Recreation facilities and will include space for: weight training and free weights; cardio-fitness machines; studios for yoga, aerobics, spin bikes, dance and combatives; and a climbing wall. UBC is one of the world’s leading universities and continued support towards the Athletics and Recreation expansion will foster student engagement and a rewarding campus life.
