School of Health and Exercise Sciences: Laboratory Expansion

School of Health and Exercise Sciences
The School of Health and Exercise Sciences is newly created with the Faculty of Health and Social Development at UBC’s Okanagan campus. With a mission to optimize human health, the School of Health and Exercise Sciences focuses on excellence in interdisciplinary teaching, research and community engagement. Students are trained to contribute to the health and wellbeing of society – from the single individual to the population as a whole.

Human Kinetics Program

The Human Kinetics Program has experienced significant growth in student enrolment and research over the past few years. Innovation and collaboration are growing as the benefits of health promotion, disease prevention, and rehabilitation become increasingly important in health care.

In addition to classroom instruction, experiential learning in is vital to the development of knowledge and skills. Human Kinetics students learn through hands-on training in laboratories located on campus, as well as in community centres, hospitals, and seniors’ care-facilities. This training provides students with the opportunity to connect theory to practice, and to build experience in a wide range of health care and assessment scenarios.

The Human Kinetics Program seeks to expand laboratory space in order to increase experiential learning opportunities and to accommodate student growth in the program. Increasing the scope of equipment and training time available to students will deepen their understanding of health assessment and rehabilitation practices, and will enhance the quality of health promotion.
