The Faculty of Dentistry encourages original research and scholarship, which enhances the knowledge and understanding of the dental field for the benefit of society.
In pursuit of this goal, our researchers adhere to the highest ethical standards. Attracting approximately $4 million annually in research funding – more dollars per capita than any other dental school in Canada – we strive to:
This fund enables our researchers to increase their competitiveness at international levels and facilitates research across disciplines.
The worldwide competition for talent is intense. Despite our strong reputation, we face major challenges in attracting and retaining faculty. In addition, many of our long-standing members are due to retire over the next few years. To attract and retain top-notch talent, we must ensure that the conditions of employment and the working environment fare as attractive as possible.
The most effective way to accomplish this is by establishing endowed professorships and chairs.
A chair allows for the appointment of an established scholar, usually a professor. Chairs are fully funded by the donor, and cover salary and research costs. Donors may designate chairs either as general university chairs, or as chairs in a specific department.
A professorship is held by a UBC professor. The University funds the cost of the salary, while the professorship covers both salary incentives and research support. Professorships are a fundraising priority for the Faculty of Dentistry as we seek to attract the best possible teachers and researchers.
